HitFilm is an all-in-one program, bringing together video editing, 3D compositing and visual effects functionality into a single application.
Last year, FXhome released Hitfilm 2 Express:
a free edition of its editing, compositing and visual effects software.
It proved so popular that the developer has just done the same thing
with version 3.
HitFilm 3 Express, out today, contains the application’s core functionality, and is licensed for commercial use. A powerful editing and effects tool in its own right
As with its predecessor, HitFilm 3 Express is a cut-down version of the current commercial version of the software, HitFilm 3 Pro, but it’s still a pretty powerful application in its own right.
For a start, you get the core editing and 3D compositing
functionality from the Pro edition, plus 157 built-in 2D and 3D effects,
including greenscreen, grading, and a range of lights and flares.
It’s also a GPU-accelerated app, and one designed to run on
relatively modest hardware: the minimum system is an Intel Core-i3 CPU
or AMD equivalent, 4GB RAM and Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics. Custom training from Film Riot
There’s also some nice training material to help you get started, based around Portal Combat, Film Riot‘s new VFX short, created exclusively using HitFilm 3 Express, which you can see at the top of the story.
You can download the source footage from FXhome’s website, and view a
series of video tutorials designed to have you “editing like a pro in
no time. Or at least like someone who’s followed an editing tutorial.” So what are the limitations?
Not surprisingly, there are some restrictions on what you can do in
Express. First off, some of the content from the commercial edition has
been split out into a range of paid-for extension packs.
These include both themed FX types (film damage, light flares, sci-fi
effects, and so on) and specific toolsets, including advanced grading,
noise removal, the particle engines and 3D model support.
Mocha HitFilm, the version of Imagineer Systems’ planar-tracking
technology integrated into the Pro version of the software, is also a
paid add-on, as is import of Dolby AC3 and AVCHD video.
In addition, there are some things you can only do in the
Pro edition, like exporting in OpenEXR format or at a resolution over
1080p – the Pro version bumps the limit up to 4K.
There are also 12 effects that are exclusive to the Pro edition, as are HitFilm 3’s new effects plugins for Vegas Pro, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects and Motion.
Blackmagic has been transforming Resolve over the past few years into a powerful NLE video editor (non-linear editor) coming close to Premiere Pro CC, Final Cut Pro X and Avid Media Composer. DaVinci Resolve 12 combines professional non-linear video editing with
the world’s most advanced color corrector so now you can edit, color
correct, finish and deliver all from one system! DaVinci Resolve is
completely scalable and resolution independent so it can be used on set,
in a small studio or integrated into the largest Hollywood production
pipeline! From creative editing and multi camera television production
to high end finishing and color correction, only DaVinci Resolve
features the creative tools, compatibility, speed and legendary image
quality you need to manage your entire workflow, which is why it is the
number one solution used on Hollywood feature films.
One of the best programs for creating photos with a tilt-shift miniature effect. You can find a lot of applications that claim to apply similar effect
to images, still most often the algorithm is improper, e.g. they use
Gaussian blur instead of much more complex Lens (optical) blur which
produces an effect identical to real bokeh; or they apply
semi-transparent overlay, using wrong type of transition from focused to
blurred areas, etc.
Tilt Shift Generator renders the original image pixel-by-pixel with
the highest accuracy. This utility offers additional settings which help
the output images to be better in comparison to photos taken by
high-priced “tilt and shift” lens to simulatetheminiature effect. Tilt Shift Generator surpasses Photoshop tools and popular cameras’ built in filters by result.
Blender is a professional free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. Blender's features include 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, raster graphics editing, rigging and skinning, fluid and smoke simulation, particle simulation, soft body simulation, sculpting, animating, match moving, camera tracking, rendering, video editing and compositing. Alongside the modeling features it also has an integrated game engine.
List of improvements for the new version of Blender 2.73:
Several Cycles Rendering updates, improvements and new features, support for GeForce 9xx GPUs.
New fullscreen mode, improved Pie Menus, 3D View can now display the world background.
Knife-tool now allows freehand smart cuts, and more improvements were made in selection tools, Bevel Modifier and Shapekeys.
Unwrapping UVs was improved, strength is now enabled for Grab and
Snake Hook brushes, better visual feedback mode for painting with masks.
Sequencer now can show a backdrop, strips can be snapped to others along with other improvements.
Freestyle NPR Rendering has a new SVG exporter add-on, along with other improvements.
Grease Pencil had a major update, it is now possible to edit and
animate strokes! New draw styles, and imporvements in user interface.
Collada Importer was updated, improving the compatibility with other software’s bone concepts.
Add-ons: FBX improved importing/exporting armatures, some Python API changes could need some Add-ons to be updated!
As usual several other minor updates and improvements, and lot of bugfixing also in this release.
The Knife-tool now allows freehand cuts drawing and closing of
cut-loops via double click. Selection during modeling has been improved
by adding the ability to select similar regions, plus the select
more/less function has gotten the option to skip adjacent faces. A few
other improvements were made, like for the Bevel Modifier, Shapekeys
Unwrapping UVs was improved by using a simpler unwrap method.
Numerical input is supported for changing brush size, detail size and
strength. The latter one can now also be changed for Grab and Snake Hook
brushes. When painting with masks, the face-mask edges are hidden to
give proper visual feedback of what you are painting on.
Similar to the Compositor, an option to show the current frame as a
backdrop has been added. Strips can be snapped to others by pressing the
G key while moving them and their content can be moved independently of the strip itself (S).
A few minor things were also made, such as an option to toggle all
waveforms on/off, or drawing of meta-strip range while editing them.
The non-photorealistic render engine Freestyle got a new SVG
exporter, implemented as an add-on. It’s now also possible to cache view
maps and a few more options for chain selection and chain sorting were
added.
The Grease Pencil was given a major update. As a result, it is now
possible to edit and animate strokes! There are new ways to draw styles,
like filled stroke interiors, volumetric strokes, etc. The Grease
Pencil’s user interface (which is now completely defined via Python) has
been improved as well, plus two quick access pie menus were created for
it. Besides from the Grease Pencil update, there are some other minor
improvements regarding animation.
Some updates were made for the Collada Importer. Compatibility of
Blender bones to other software’s bone concepts was made better and the
problems with “Leaf Bones” and that Collada isn’t aware of Blenders
connection system between bones were fixed.
The FBX Add-on now uses some advanced handling/tweaking options for
importing and exporting armatures. To Add-on developers: Some changes
were made to the Python API, make sure to check them out and update your
Add-ons if necessary!
Several optimizations: mesh deform modifier now uses SSE2 with
multi-threading, compositor’s gaussian blur node implemented in OpenCL,
vertex parent optimized for a few cases. In 3D View added GLSL specular
transparency support for Blender internal materials, and support for
specular highlights in cycles materials. Motion Tracking predictive
tracking has been implemented now, enabled by default and doing magic
under the curtain. Added shortcuts for masks and tracks copy-paste
operators.
The open source (node-based) compositor Natron has just seen it's official 1.0.0 stable release, and it contains a long list of improvements.
OpenFX-focused processing in a 32bit float linear color pipeline,
OpenColorIO-based color management, OpenImageIO-based support for DPX,
EXR, TIFF, PNG etc.
Natron has received many improvements since the last
published release candidate. You can see the change-log right here or in the About window within Natron.
This is the first stable release planned to be maintained.
The quick list of new features is:
much lower RAM footprint thanks to improved caching strategy;
new HSVTool node for color grading in HSV or color replacement, new HSVToRGB and RGBToHSV nodes;
new Saturation node to adjust just the color saturation;
new DiskCache node for caching a branch of a compositing tree to disk;
tracking is threaded now to deliver better performance.
The following features are included in the plans for Natron v1.1 and already almost implemented:
Python 3 scripting: parameter expressions, user parameters,
callbacks, groups, custom graphical user interface thanks to Pyside and
overall control over the application.
Optical flow: This will be integrated with a set of different
plug-ins handling motion vectors. The motion vectors will be generated
with a VectorGenerator node and used within several effects such as
Motion blur or Retiming.
’G’mic integration: G’mic is a full featured image processing
framework containing literally hundreds of effects. It will be proposed
as a separate OpenFX plug-in not distributed with Natron due to license
issues.
In the meantime, you can get more informations about the project and Natron more specifically in FAQ section.

Blackmagic Design has released Fusion 7 limited edition for free.
It lacks some of advanced features like optical flow and the
stereoscopic 3D toolset, along with support for OpenFX plugins, but you
do get all of the keying, retiming and colour-management tools.
Network rendering is disabled, and output is limited to Ultra HD resolution, but it’s still a powerful piece of kit. Price of the commercial edition slashed
Like DaVinci Resolve, the full version of the software – now renamed
Fusion Studio – has itself been repriced at $995: a significant drop
from its original $2,495, and a fraction of the cost of Nuke, its
principal competitor.
In the past couple of years, Resolve has played a disruptive role in
the grading market, with many smaller studios electing to build
pipelines around the software instead of more expensive turnkey systems.
The parallels aren’t exact: although price is a common complaint for
freelancers, Nuke is a fraction of the cost of a Quantel or SGO system,
and The Foundry is taking steps to make it more accessible to students.
But still, making a powerful, movie-capable 3D compositing package
available for under $1,000 is bound to shake up the market – as is
making a version of that package available for free to students and
freelancers.
It will be fascinating to see where Blackmagic takes Fusion next – and how The Foundry responds.
